The company

The ILL is an international research facility at the forefront of neutron science and technology. Its High-Flux Nuclear Reactor delivers the world’s most intense neutron beams to a suite of over 40 scientific instruments. Every year, some 1800 international researchers visit the ILL to carry out cutting-edge experiments across a range of scientific disciplines, driving innovation in the fields of health, energy, the environment and quantum materials. The ILL is also involved in the production of radioisotopes for medical applications. The ILL employs over 500 staff from 25 different countries, in a diversity of careers and a multicultural and inclusive environment.

The Science Division at ILL brings together close to 200 scientists, engineers, and technicians who work collaboratively to provide users with advanced experimental capabilities and expert scientific support. The DS is responsible by operating world-class neutron scattering instruments, supporting an international user community, conducting cutting-edge research, and developing new experimental techniques. In addition, the division drives the development of next-generation instrumentation and computational tools, fosters international collaborations, and contributes to advanced training.

About the position

Within the Industrial Liaison Unit (ILU, 2 people) of ILL’s Applied Science Group (18 people), you will act as an effective and efficient interface between industry and the cutting-edge neutron techniques and scientists available at the ILL for proprietary research and development (R&D) as well as non-destructive testing (NDT).

Your tasks

In this context, you will:

• Organise and perform efficient and successful proprietary R&D and NDT utilising ILL’s neutron instruments, working closely with instrument scientists and industry clients.
• Build up expertise in neutron techniques and operating instruments relevant to industrial R&D and NDT opportunities.
• Contribute to a strategy to increase industrial R&D and NDT activity at ILL, to maximise revenue from this activity (currently around 0.5 M€ per year).
• Undertake outreach and communication activities for industrial R&D/NDT at ILL to build up a portfolio of high-potential industry contacts and generate new business opportunities.
• Manage the customer base and maintain an accurate record of all industry-related activities at ILL for periodic reporting and review for optimisation of ILL’s industry strategy with Management.
• With support from the legal service at ILL, organise the contractual agreements for proprietary beam time.
• With ILL’s Grants Office, your line manager and relevant ILL scientists, identify and pursue project-based opportunities for industry-related research at ILL.
• Liaise with local, regional and international partners to nurture a robust, collective approach to industry services at large-scale research facilities.

Desired profile

• You hold a PhD in engineering or a natural science (or equivalent qualification) and have several years of experience in a range of analytical techniques, preferably using neutrons.
• You have excellent communication skills, are highly interested in applied research and have some experience in working with industry / R&D / NDT.
• You have a strong project management culture, which will enable you to plan and manage the ILL’s involvement in R&D and NDT with industry partners.
